Sharks are hostile mobs that spawn in oceans.

Appearance

Sharks come in 9 different variants: a light grey, brown-striped variant (based on the tiger shark), an olive-grey variant with white fin tips (based on the oceanic whitetip shark), a blue variant (based on the blue shark), a grey variant (based on the bull shark), a brown-grey, purple-eyed, short-finned variant (based on the Greenland shark), a reddish-brown, flat-headed variant (based on the great hammerhead shark), a pale grey variant with a long nose and tail fin (based on the goblin shark), a dark grey variant (based on the great white shark), and a dark blue variant with white fins (based on the mako shark).

Behavior

Sharks will usually not attack players at first, and, when undisturbed, will swim around aimlessly in a similar manner to fish; however, if a player provokes them or is at a certain amount of health, they will attack. The amount of health at which sharks will attack without provocation varies within variants:

  • Tiger sharks will attack the player when they are at 5 hearts (10 HP).
  • Oceanic whitetip sharks will attack the player when they are at 8 hearts (16 HP).
  • Blue sharks, Greenland sharks, great hammerhead sharks, and goblin sharks will attack the player when they are at 4 hearts (8 HP).
  • Bull sharks, great white sharks, and mako sharks will attack the player when they are at 6.5 hearts (13 HP).

When attacking, sharks will swim towards targets in an attempt to make contact with them; mako sharks can swim twice as fast as most other sharks, which swim slightly slower than a fast-swimming player. Upon reaching their target, they will grab them before thrashing them to death; most sharks deal 3 hearts (6 HP) of damage per second, while great hammerhead sharks deal 4.5 hearts (9 HP) of damage and great white sharks deal 6 hearts (12 HP) of damage. If their target is sitting in a boat, they will attempt to destroy the boat before attacking them.

In addition to attacking players that are at certain amounts of health, sharks will also occasionally prey on any mob that enters the water, with the exception of bobbit worms and other sharks. This behavior is influenced by how hungry they are.

Predator Hunger
Upon spawning, this predatory mob will have an initial hunger defined by the sum of 10 and a random number (from 0-49); every second, this hunger goes up by a single number. In addition to this, it has a hunger threshold of 80; this threshold is vital for its effective hunger, which is 0 when below the threshold and equal to the difference between the hunger and the threshold when above it. If the effective hunger is greater than or equal to 100, the mob will immediately attack a prey animal; otherwise, its chance of predation is determined by the quotient of 1 and the difference between 100 and its effective hunger.

If a shark gets beached on land, it will start suffocating after 20 seconds. While on land, sharks will not move, and will stay in place until they die.

Trivia

  • When spawned on land, sharks will momentarily rotate downward so that their caudal fin sticks upwards at an oblique angle, making it appear as if they were tossed into the ground head-first.
  • As of now, sharks are one of the few mobs in the mod to have variants that drastically vary in appearance (most variants have their own model), alongside jellyfish, eels, and whales.
  • Sharks are one of the few mobs in the mod to vary in size, alongside jellyfish, songbirds, eels, whales, butterflies, and dragonflies.
  • Sharks are one of the few mobs in the mod that can prevent their targets from dropping items, alongside lampreys, barracudas, piranhas, and octopuses.
    • As sharks can neither be caught in a bucket nor tamed, they are the only mob in the mod that can prevent their targets from dropping items at all times.
  • Great white and mako sharks have potential to be very dangerous when encountered early in the game, due to their relatively low aggression threshold as well as the former's high durability and powerful attacks and the latter's swift swimming speed.
